A Musical Miscarriage
(2008)
In this paper, I draw on material from the Lincoln Center archives to discuss the social forces at play in the construction and reconstructions of Avery Fisher Hall. I argue that debate about the science of acoustics masked ideological issues at stake in the appearance and sound of the hall. PDF

Notes on 4 Months 3 Weeks and 2 Days
(2008)
This is a series of notes I wrote about Cristian Mungiu's 4 Months 3 Weeks and 2 Days, which won the 2007 Palm d'Or. I claim that the film's ambient sound is key to understanding the characters and their relationships. Conversely, the film's plot can be read as a statement on one's responsibility in the sonic world. PDF
Cellular Chimes
(2008)
This proposal describes the a sound sculpture that responds to the affect that cell phones have on the soundscape and one's sense of agency within it. The aim of the sculpture would be to turn cell phones into triggering devices for making spontaneous music on a collective instrument. PDF
Silent Turnstiles
(2008)
This is another proposal for a sound installation responding to the urban soundscape. I claim that the relatively quiet, though makedly unpleasant, sounds of subway turnstiles are the first step in our acquiesence to the subway station soundscape. Ideally, the installation would move between various subway stations over the course of several months so that passengers would be surprised by it. PDF
