Walter Benjamin Radio Project

In the early 1930s, Walter Benjamin wrote and broadcast a series of about 30 children's stories. A few of these can be found translated into English in his Selected Writings (edited by Michael W. Jennings). The rest--as far as I can tell--remain untranslated.

This strikes me as unfortunate. The stories that I have read are interesting and entertaining, and, according to Jeffrey Melman, they are valuable windows into Benjamin's thought. A complete set of translations would be a boon to english-speaking scholars and children alike.

To this end, I am organizing German/English speakers to begin amateur translations of the stories. Once translated, I will record recitations of the stories for eventual radio broadcast. If you speak German, or are otherwise interested in this project, please do not hesitate to get in touch with me via my contact page.
